Hungarian VAT reclaim

Hungary allows foreign VAT registrants resident in the EU and Switzerland to reclaim VAT incurred in Hungary. Although the process has changed as of 1 January 2010 and foreign companies resident in other EU member states (not including Switzerland) are already able to submit their VAT refund claim in their home country, the process is still quite complicated and requires direct communication with the Hungarian tax authorities.

Since the communication in languages other than Hungarian may cause significant delays in processing the refund claim, as well as there are typical situations where the Hungarian tax authorities may want to make detailed investigations to verify the refund claim, a local help to overcome these obstacles is strongly recommended.

Our experts have built a direct and very good relationship with the Hungarian tax authority's foreign VAT department and have a 100% success rate in securing foreign VAT reclaims.

IMPORTANT: due to the elctronic VAT filing introduced from 1 Januray 2010, our services can help the most if we are able to represent the foreign company from the beginning. This requires the designation of OrienTax as an authorised representative already in the VAT refund claim submitted in the home country.

Our services would come in the following

  • For VAT registrants resident in the United Kingdom, we are able to manage the whole process from start to finish due to OrienTax has been registered as an EU VAT refund Agent at HMRC (the UK tax authorities).
  • For VAT registrants in other member states, we can be authorised under the rules of the given jurisdiction and then act on behalf of the foreign applicant before Hungarian tax authorrities automatically.
  • For companies resident in Switzerland the VAT refund claim has to be submitted in paper format by a designated representative in Hungary. Under a local authorisation, we can help you put together the whole package and manage the smooth accomplishment of the refund claim.
